Highly simplified RTA methods have increasingly been adopted due to the proliferation of factory drilling and analysis in unconventional assets. However, high value conventional wells demand analysis that can cope with real physics complex geology, geometry, phase behavior, and interference.
Operators are not going to trust a simple decline curve to analyze such a valuable asset.

This course, spread over 2 days, teaches the generic methodology and the practice of Rate Transient Analysis (RTA) in addition to the mechanics of Topaze software. Although the emphasis is on a visual and conceptual approach to interpretation including essential mathematics, the full theory, including formulae and derivations, as well as conceptual explanations, are provided in the accompanying KAPPA Dynamic Data Analysis (DDA) handbook provided in electronic format to each attendee.
With a focus on high value conventional wells, field examples are used to illustrate each concept.

Rate Transient Analysis in Topaze

This course is intended for reservoir engineers, production engineers, and geoscientists involved in Production Analysis, reservoir characterization, forecasting and reserves estimation.

  • Strengthen your RTA expertise from fundamentals to advanced applications.
  • Learn hands-on workflows in Topaze.
  • Learn practical interpretation techniques.
  • Improve forecast reliability and reservoir understanding.

Course programme:

Day 1

RTA methodology and Topaze practical :

The course introduces the theory and methodology of Rate Transient Analysis (RTA), from conventional tools such as Arps and Fetkovich to modern methods including Blasingame, material balance and log-log diagnostic techniques both analytical and numerical.

It combines essential concepts with a strong practical focus using Topaze, where participants learn the full workflow from data loading and quality control to decline curve analysis, analytical and fast modelling, and the estimation of key reservoir parameters such as permeability, skin and drainage area.

Additional workflows, forecast and Sensitivity

Additional workflows are addressed, including multiphase analysis, pressure corrections and test design, followed by forecasting techniques under various operating constraints.
The course also covers sensitivity analysis and automated regression tools to improve model robustness and support reliable production forecasting, in line with KAPPA’s approach of combining theory with practical, real-data application.

Day 2

Gas well: RTA theory, examples and Gas condensate analysis

The course presents the specific theory of Rate Transient Analysis for gas wells, including diffusivity equation and material balance corrections, together with the use of specialized diagnostic plots such as Flowing Material Balance and normalized rate analysis.
These concepts are applied through practical examples using decline curve analysis and analytical models, with a focus on estimating gas initially in place and accounting for effects such as nearby well interference and aquifer support.

It further extends to gas-condensate systems, introducing analytical approaches with time-dependent skin as well as linear and non-linear numerical models, including explicit simulation of condensate drop-out and interaction with surrounding wells.

Interactions with Saphir and advanced models

The training also highlights the link and complementary relationship between Saphir and Topaze, combining pressure transient interpretation to derive kh and skin with RTA workflows to evaluate drainage area and boundary effects, before addressing advanced applications for multi-fractured horizontal wells using dedicated diagnostics and analytical, proxy and full 3D numerical modelling approaches.
